On a hot summer day in 2009, Brad Johnson opened a form letter from TruGreen. They were interested in talking to him about buying his company, LawnAmerica, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Johnson had done that once before, and wasn’t interested in doing it again, so he tossed the letter in the trash.
But it got him thinking. What would he do if he sold his business and walked away with a pile of money? The answer came pretty fast: Hike the Appalachian Trail. Read more about this story...

Brad Johnson has an arthritic left hip — one that's rubbing bone on bone. Last week, that hip required a cortisone shot. But surgery will have to wait until the 56-year-old Tulsan either gives in to, or conquers, the Appalachian Trail.
On Friday, Johnson began his four-month trek along the AT, a 2,175-mile public footpath stretching through 14 states from Georgia's Springer Mountain to Maine's Mount Katahdin. That's about 300 miles shy of hiking from Tulsa to New York City twice.

AT2010 Blog: "56 and Counting"
April 11, 2010 - Interview with Tulsa Radio Station KRMG
We’re starting to get some press coverage, with more and more folks finding out about AT2010 and wanting to find out more. Last week, KRMG and Star103 radio stations played a 15-minute interview with me about my journey. One of our sponsors, News on 8, interviewed me on their morning show. I must admit, I’d never even seen it, as I’m always busy working at 9:30 in the morning. They were great folks and I’ll be doing that again in the future. And I’ll be speaking to some groups soon about my journey, telling others what this deal is all about.

Lawn & Landscape Magazine: Brad Johnson of LawnAmerica is Heading for the Appalachian Trail
January 13, 2010 - Article on Lawn & Landscape MagazineEarlier this week, I was searching for some information on Lawn and Landscape Online and I noticed an article about Brad Johnson of LawnAmerica in Tulsa’s plans to hike the Appalachian Trail later this year. It piqued my interest for a variety of reasons – I am originally from the Tulsa area and I am really jealous of the opportunity to spend four months hiking the Appalachian Trail, so I clicked through to the special website he has set up to blog while he is on the trail and soliciting sponsors who will contribute to select charities (and whose contributions will be matched by LawnAmerica). read more...
